In Washington, the US Department of Energy announced $228 million in new awards, including $122 million to establish an Energy Innovation Hub aimed at developing revolutionary methods to generate fuels directly from sunlight, and $106 million for six projects that convert industrial CO2 emissions into fuel, plastics, cement, and fertilizers. 

The Fuels from Sunlight Energy Innovation Hub is one of three Hubs that will receive funding in FY10. The Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis (JCAP), to be led by the Cal Tech in partnership with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.  The goal of the Hub is to develop an integrated solar energy-to-chemical fuel conversion system and move this system from the bench-top discovery phase to a scale where it can be commercialized.

The $106 million for CO2-to-products grants will be matched by $156 million in private cost shares. Two of the six projects involve the conversion of CO2 to biofuels. Among the winners: $6.2 million for Touchstone Research Laboratory's algae project in Ohio, and $24.2 million for Phycal's Hawaii algae project.

In Virginia, Alion Science and Technology announced that it has received a contract to develop models for assessing the processing technologies and overall economics of pennycress biofuels. Pennycress produces twice the oil per acre as soybeans and can be grown by U.S. farmers in the winter and harvested in the spring between segments of a typical corn/soybean rotation.

In Iowa, SynGest announced that the Iowa Power Fund and Iowa Office of Energy Independence are in final negotiations for a contract in the amount of $2.5 million for the development and commercialization of SynGest's bioammonia production technology in the state of Iowa. SynGest's Iowa plant will use 130,000 tons of biomass to manufacture 50,000 tons of BioAmmonia annually to fertilize 500,000 acres of corn farmland.

In Nebraska, Green Plains Renewable Energy (GPRE) announced that it will implement corn oil extraction technology at its ethanol plants, will complete the project by Q1 2011 and thereby enhance operating income by $15 million to $19 million per year. The Company anticipates first revenues from corn oil extraction at the Obion, Tennessee plant to occur within the next 90 days.

El bambú es una sólida opción a la hora de decorar los suelos de nuestro hogar de acuerdo a la sostenibilidad porque son las plantas terrestres conocidas de crecimiento más veloz, hasta un metro en 24 horas. Existen varios tipos que se adaptan a las diferentes necesidades de cada estancia, ya que no es lo mismo la habitación de los niños que la cocina o el salón. La resistencia y el color varían en las distintas modalidades de bambú. Si hay alguna condición ambiental donde no se recomienda el uso del bambú, es la de excesiva humedad o demasiada sequedad ambiental, algo que no difiere de la mayoría de las maderas.

Destaca las ventajas de la competencia, como sucede en telecomunicaciones

Carlos Slim Helú pidió que haya inversión privada en el sector energético, como sucede en las telecomunicaciones, en donde hay campo abierto a la competencia.

"El sector de telecomunicaciones es un campo abierto a la competencia en el que la inversión privada está presente; es necesario que hubiera inversión privada y competencia para el sector energético", dijo el multimillonario.

Integrante del grupo asesor de la ONU en temas de energía y cambio climático (AGECC), para analizar alternativas que permitan cumplir los objetivos globales de acceso a energía y eficiencia energética, el empresario agregó que si hubiera inversión privada en el sector energético, se podrían aplicar subsidios cruzados para promover fuentes de energía más amigables como son las renovables.

En esta medida, destacó, se podría incentivar la energía social para acercar a la población marginada a servicios de electricidad y combustibles básicos.

Es el caso, agregó, de la telefonía social o la banda ancha, que deben ser para todos.

"La energía, el agua potable y las telecomunicaciones deben ser universales, con servicios para todos", mencionó el hombre más rico del mundo, según la revista Forbes.

Dichas propuestas son parte del reporte del AGECC, publicado el 28 de abril pasado, en el cual se urgió a la comunidad internacional a proveer acceso universal a los servicios modernos de energía a los 3 mil millones de personas quienes viven en pobreza energética en el mundo, para el año 2030.

Al presentar los avances de la primera reunión del Grupo Asesor de la ONU, su presidente, Kamdeh Yumkella, coincidió en que la libre competencia en el sector energético permitiría incentivar el desarrollo de tecnologías más eficientes en el uso de la energía.
Además destacó la aplicación de un impuesto al carbón, como se ha hecho en otros países como Noruega y Suiza, lo que permitiría apoyar el desarrollo de tecnologías enfocadas a energías renovables.

La Secretaria de Energía, Georgina Kessel, mencionó por su parte, que en el país hay 3.5 millones de habitantes que actualmente no tienen acceso a ningún tipo de energía hacia los cuales se están enfocando programas de sustentabilidad energética mediante energías renovables.

Requieren invertir hasta dls. 720 millones. Busca Gobierno satisfacer 15% de lo que demanda la aviación

Para iniciar la carrera en la producción de biocombustibles para la aviación y satisfacer la demanda inicial, el Gobierno de México proyecta la construcción de cuatro refinerías que requerirán una inversión de entre 480 y 720 millones de dólares.

Gilberto López Meyer, director general de Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliares (ASA), informó que con una refinería con capacidad para producir 400 millones de litros al año de bioturbosina podría únicamente satisfacer el 1 por ciento de la demanda que existe en el País.

Con cuatro refinerías, destacó, se podría producir hasta 15 por ciento de la demanda, como pretende el Gobierno para la próxima década.
Para la construcción de dichas refinerías, es necesario hacer cambios normativos y en la ley para que los inversionistas privados decidan apostarle a este negocio, manifestó Adrián Fernández, presidente del Instituto Nacional de Ecología.

Sobre el tema Darrin Morgan, director de Estrategia de Biocombustibles Sustentables de Boeing, declaró que la inversión inicial que se haga en las refinerías será cara debido a que la producción inicia.

Mientras que México prepara los trabajos para la producción de biocombustibles para la aviación, el Gobierno federal, a través de ASA, coordina los trabajos para que se realice en este mismo año el primer vuelo de prueba en un avión con matrícula mexicana que utilice biocombustibles.
López Meyer dijo que aún no se determina si sería de una aerolínea comercial o incluso de uso oficial y que se realizan los esfuerzos necesarios para que el vuelo de prueba se haga en 2010 y no en 2011, como se había proyectado inicialmente.

La industria aeronáutica, recordó, contribuye con 1.3 por ciento de todas las emisiones contaminantes al ambiente que produce México.
Alejandro Ríos, director de ASA Combustibles, comentó que es más fácil iniciar la producción de biocombustibles para la aviación porque mientras hay 11 mil gasolinerías en el País, sólo hay 63 estaciones de servicio de ASA.

Aseguró que en el plan de acción que se elabora participan desde productores, empresas, instituciones y diversas dependencias para identificar retos y oportunidades en la materia.

Tan sólo Boeing otorgará recursos para la investigación que se realiza sobre el tema.

Destacó que en el País ya existen empresas interesadas en la producción a gran escala de estas fuentes de energía, como Asideros Globales y Energy JH, entre otras.

* 40 Millones de litros anuales de biocombustible espera producir el País para el 2015.

LanzaTechZen and the Art of Biofuels Development

Does LanzaTech represent a new way to extract value, or a new way of understand it?

, LanzaTech, a company pursuing the conversion of industrial waste gases into fuels and chemicals using bacteria, officially announced a $18M USD Series B financing, led by Qiming Ventures, a well known China focused venture capital firm.

When we first looked closely at LanzaTech last year, we noted that it has been developing its proprietary bacteria since 2005, with a goal of utilizing the low-hydrogen, carbon monoxide-rich waste gas streams from steel mills.

Digest readers who follow the steel industry know that New Zealand does not figure amongst the world's top 40 steel producers, and the few million tons produced domestically were sufficient for pilot scale only. With 500 million tons representing more than 35 percent of global production, China is the right country for taking LanzaTech's technology to commercial scale.

Waste: noun or verb?

We are calling them waste gases, but they are anything but. The nabobs at Waste Management continue to encourage us to regard them as material streams rather than waste - that the terms "waste" is simply reflecting that we do not have a feasible way to use some materials at the present time.

We simply lacked a technology. Until lately that is, when LanzaTech (among others in the microbial liquid fuels race) turned to our friends, the bacteria, for the answers. Turns out that our friends have had the answer for millennia (though we sometimes help them along with some genetic upgrades) - we simply lacked the microscopes to see them, an industrial process to harness their talents, and the perspective to understand.

In Washington state, Alaska Airlines, Boeing, Portland International Airport, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Spokane International Airport and Washington State University announced a strategic initiative to promote aviation biofuel development in the Pacific Northwest. The "Sustainable Aviation Fuels Northwest" project will look at biomass options within a four-state area as sources for creating renewable jet fuel.

In Nebraska, Archer Daniels Midland Company opened its new dry milling plant and ethanol operation in Columbus, which has created 150 new jobs. The dry mill has a capacity of 300 million gallons of ethanol per year, and also includes a cogeneration plant.

In Indiana, Aventine Renewable Energy confirmed that it is on-track to finishing its 100-acre ethanol biorefinery in Ports of Indiana-Mount Vernon by September 2010. Construction on the plant began in late 2007, but stopped in February 2009 when Aventine filed for bankruptcy, leaving the plant only 80% complete.

In London, the Department for Environment Food and Regulatory Affairs on July 8 launched formal discussion implementation of the revised EU Waste Framework Directive in England and Wales, which mandates a waste management order of importance as Reduce, Re-use, Recycle, Recovery, and finally when all else fails, Dispose.
 
In the UK, East Midlands Trains serving Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, Nottingham and Derby will continue using DiesoLiFT 10 in its light rail, diesel multiple unit (DMU) operations. The Missouri-based firm International Fuel Technology announced that East Midlands Trains recently reported a 4.4% improvement in fuel economy, estimated to save nearly 350,000 liters, or 92,000 gallons, of diesel fuel per year, using the fuel. 

In Australia, a new $8.8 million cellulosic ethanol pilot plant owned and operated by Queensland University of Technology was opened on July 9, 2010. The plant could potentially replace up to a third of the unleaded petrol requirements for the Australian state of Queensland.

In Washington, the American Forest & Paper Association reports that pulp and paper mills and wood products facilities, together, produced 94 percent of the renewable fuel energy generated by all manufacturing facilities in all sectors. All of these renewable fuels are derived from wood. Pulp and paper mills produced 88 percent of these, while wood products facilities produced six percent.

In Massachusetts, the Department of Public Utilities July 6 ruled that existing in-state purchase requirements should be lifted, and authorized electric utilities should reopen their renewable power solicitations to consider bids from eligible out-of-state generators in addition to in-state suppliers.

The Biofuels Digest Index™ (BDI), a basket of public biofuels stocks, gained 0.35 percent to 60.86 as BP surged and ethanol slipped.  For the day, Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) nudged downwards 0.15 percent to $26.68, while BP gained 7.96 percent to $36.76.  Among smaller caps, PetroAlgae (PALG.OB) fell 7.86 percent to $23.95. Overall, advances led declines 5 to 2 for the day.

Camelina report1 billion gallons of Camelina biofuel are projected to be produced for the aviation and biodiesel sectors by 2025, creating 25,000 new jobs; producing over $5.5 billion in new revenues and $3.5 billion in new agricultural income for U.S. and Canadian farmers.  The projections are contained in "Camelina Aviation Biofuels Market Opportunity and Renewable Energy Strategy Report," released today by Biomass Advisors, the research division of Biofuels Digest.
